A guide to the wonders of grade 5
We're having a quiz on Thursday September 19th. Students are expected to know the provinces, capital cities and important bodies of water. There is a map assignment that students are using to prepare for the quiz which labels the different bodies of water.
Here are some resources that students can use to practice for the quiz at home: Click on the games below to practice! http://www.purposegames.com/game/396 http://lizardpoint.com/geography/canada-quiz.php http://www.yourchildlearns.com/mappuzzle/canada-puzzle.html http://www.ilike2learn.com/ilike2learn/canada/canada.html http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Canadian_Geography.htm https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/how-well-do-you-know-canadian-geography https://online.seterra.com/en/vgp/3006 https://www.canadiangeographic.ca/content/kids-games

Meet the teacher night is Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6 pm. I hope to see you there!
Welcome to Mr. Barg's blog, an online guide to thriving in grade 5.
I am incredibly excited to get to know the students of 5.6 this year and enjoy incredible successes with them. The blog will be a place I come to post things that are coming up and also to celebrate student learning. You will also be able to find helpful resources here, and some digitized assignments. The blog is not an online class. It will be updated 1-2 times per week and should not be solely depended upon for task information. As a teacher, I strive to: -Be approachable, open and friendly -Be communicative with students, parents and other staff members -Provide a structured learning environment -Provide feedback for students and parents -Work together with students and parents to achieve academic and personal goals -Ensure accountability for students -Provide a work environment that is safe, challenging, stimulating, fun and with an emphasis on growth mindset Please contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns. My email address is [email protected] There will be plenty more information to come over the coming days. Stay tuned! Tomorrow in math, we will do a year long math challenge. This along with the year end reports will give students a good idea of things they can work on for next year! Expect this to be sent home Monday of next week.

Your letter needs to be persuasive in nature. In other words, you need to effectively communicate reasons as to why or why not build the CPR. Reasons Reasons for Reasons against Your letter will consist of 5 paragraphs. Each paragraph will be 4 sentences long (minimum). In your first paragraph:
Attention Parents!

Here are the words and sentences.
Word work Unfamiliar words Transmission Ingenious Awning Baubles Inhumane Adjectives Misty Solidly Eagerly Tingly Savagely Verbs Jerked Smelled Angled Rattled Simple The tall man stood at the edge of the porch. Several times they passed by cabins on the hill. Compound -The windows were broken and greenery was growing through the floorboards. -She wondered why he took the animals, but never told her on the phone earlier. - Everybody can just sign up and play, but who wants to be on a team with a bunch of pity players? Complex Even though the part was a small one, Bobby was thrilled to get a part in the school play. Because my porridge had gone cold, I put it in the microwave. Let’s go back to the theatre where we watched the ballet. We will be doing a series of word work quizzes in 5c to finish the year, the first one being tomorrow.
Students will identify complex, compound and simple sentences that they picked out of their books and shared with me. They will also identify verbs and adjectives as well as try to spell 5 unfamiliar words. The following picture is what the quiz will be based on and is completely sourced by students from their own book club novels. This is almost unheard of! Well, ok, maybe not. But we can use this as an opportunity to learn about Calgary's pilot project to de-ice roads with a beet juice solution rather than a salt based solution. Here are some articles below. 5C Students are organizing their information into google slides and will present some of their answers on Thursday May 23.
After reading the 3 articles, answer these questions: Why is Calgary covering some of its roads with beet juice brine this year? What type of mixture is beet juice brine? What were they using before beet juice brine? What are some environmental benefits from changing the way Calgary ices its roads? How does beet juice brine help to save Calgary’s cars? What is corrosion? Why is it that salt helps to get rid of ice? What do you wonder? 3 links for different articles (search for: beet juice brine Calgary roads) https://www.inverse.com/article/39632-beet-juice-melt-snow-ice https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-beet-brine-snow-ice-control-1.4909615 http://www.calgarycitynews.com/2017/12/its-beets-city-uses-beet-brine-to.html You will be assessed on:
2. Research/Inquiry Accurate information is given demonstrating a deep understanding of chemistry. 3. Reading to understand (Hum) Using texts/articles to find information on a specific subject and answering guiding research questions |
