A guide to the wonders of grade 5
A look back at the week that was... In Humanities, we worked through basic sentence structure by asking the question: what is a sentence? We looked at both simple sentences and compound sentences. We also talked about how creating better sentences helps us to become better communicators. The eventual goal is to be able to master sentence use through variation. We also studied the Physical regions of Canada and created mind maps to represent their uniqueness. In Science, we looked at the 3 zones of a wetland and created a cut out wetland in our visual journal. We also looked at roles within an ecosystem and ended the week by creating a human food web. In Math, we did mental math exercises as well as looking further in to whole numbers through improving our conceptual knowledge of place value. Here is a helpful video if you require some more support. A look ahead.... In Humanities, we will continue to look at sentences by looking at complex sentences. We will also look at how to make a better map! There will also be a check-in on Canadian provinces and Capitals on Tuesday. In Science, we will be creating a wetland diorama starting on Tuesday. Students have been asked to bring a shoe/cereal box. In Math, we will be looking at procedural knowledge of multi-digit addition and subtraction. There is also a check-in for place value on Wednesday.

GRADE 5 BLOG: http://kodiaks5.weebly.com ***September 20th is Meet The Teacher night. Sessions will run at 6:30, 7:00 and 7:30. Welcome to Mr. Barg's blog, an online guide to thriving in grade 5.
I am incredibly excited to get to know the students of 5F this year and enjoy incredible successes with them. The blog will be a place I come to post things that are coming up and also to celebrate student learning. You will also be able to find helpful resources here, and some digitized assignments. However, the intention of the blog is not to be an online class. It will be updated 1-2 times per week and should not be solely depended upon for task information. As a teacher, I strive to: -Be approachable, open and friendly -Be communicative with students, parents and other staff members -Provide a structured learning environment -Provide feedback for students and parents -Work together with students and parents to achieve academic and personal goals -Ensure accountability for students -Provide a work environment that is safe, challenging, stimulating, fun and with an emphasis on mindfulness Please contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns. My email address is [email protected] There will be plenty more information to come over the coming days. Stay tuned! |
