Equivalent fractions is a challenging concept. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be looking at this concept with the aim of it becoming a part of our mental math repertoire. Here is a brief video explaining the basics. Humanities
The week that was... This week, in Humanities, we began writing creation myths for a landform that is found in one of the 6 geographic regions in Canada. We are examining how story telling can connect to a culture's values and beliefs. The week ahead... We will continue working with our creation myth and transition into learning of specific indigenous cultures throughout Canada. Math The week that was... We reviewed key concepts in fractions and worked on ordering fractions on a number line using string and clothespins. We were able to relate the concept of the number line to meter sticks and then used it to look at tenths and hundredths. The week ahead... We will continue this by looking at decimals as they relate to place value. We will also be building on our fraction knowledge to form more equivalent fractions and improper fractions. Science The week that was... We reviewed electricity terms and looked into static electricity and magnetism. We also did a lab with Ms. Ng's grade 9 class where students worked with their buddies to test different solids for magnetism, solubility and conductivity. Pictures above. The week ahead... We will do an introduction for weather and also do a key terms check-in that will cover electricity and magnetism with some bonus questions on chemistry. This will be on Wednesday. The key terms may include... Electricity: -Conductivity -Insulator -Resistor -Circuit -Electron -Proton -Neutron -Parallel circuit -Series circuit -Power source -Static electricity -Friction Chemistry: -Solvent -Dissolve -Solute -Solution -Physical change -Chemical change -States of matter -Different mixtures - Math The week that was... Students have been working through representing fractions in multiple ways including using a number line, different shapes and as a part of a set. Coming up... We will compare fractions to each other and relate them to decimals. Students also have the option to re-write their multiplication tests this week once they have taken them home and made corrections. They must schedule this time with me. Science
The week that was... We have wrapped up chemistry with our beet juice brine experiment. Students researched why Calgary is starting to move towards beet juice brine rather than salt solutions to de-ice its roads then we put it into practice by trying each on a sheet of ice in the classroom. A look ahead... We have begun electricity and will look at simple and parallel circuits next week. Humanities The week that was... Students edited their historical figures. They worked through an editing process that included self and peer edits. A look ahead... We began our study on the Canadian Pacific Railway and began our journey into persuasive writing. Parents are welcome to come with their sons/daughters to try out our Locked Room tomorrow any time between 3:30-5:30. It is looking great!
Also, we are collecting food bank donations as a school from now until December 18th. Please bring any non-perishable food item that you can spare. Thanks! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfepsHJPR4tyHvrNut2MmIIVLmozniuUBeiAAKzkbqsDBtTfA/viewform?usp=sf_link
Students were given class time to read these articles and answer the questions below. These must be complete for Wednesday when we do our ice melting lab.

What type of mixture is beet juice brine? What were they using before beet juice brine? What are some environmental benefits from changing the way Calgary ices its roads? How does beet juice brine help to save Calgary’s cars? What is corrosion? Why is it that salt helps to get rid of ice? What do you wonder? Thanks to everyone who made it out for Parent Teacher Interviews today and yesterday.
As always, it is great to meet parents and talk about plans for student success! Humanities The Week that was... We have finished our Jumbo map task. The maps fit together well and will be hung in the classroom on Monday! We have begun our paragraph study which is a part of our writing sprint that we will do until the end of the term. Our focus will be on structured paragraph writing, punctuation and organizing interesting thoughts in to full ideas. A look ahead... We will be continuing to work on our creative writing with a focus on the things listed above. Also, we are researching historical figures of Canada. Below, there is a link to a paragraph slideshow that we have begun to look at in class. It includes a video lesson on descriptive writing and some writing prompts. Science The week that was... We have been studying news articles about Calgary's changing methods of road de-icing. The city is beginning to move towards beet juice brine rather than a salt solution in order due to its corrosive effects on vehicles and other environmental factors. A look ahead... We will be testing both a beet juice brine and a salt solution for both their ice melting and corrosive properties. Math The week that was... Students have completed a mid point assessment on multiplication. Those were handed back at parent teacher interviews. For those who missed it, expect to see them on Monday. We are working hard on a range of multiplication skills that range from multiples, factors, area, perimeter, patterns and 2x2 digit multiplication. Below, there is a link to an area task that we did this week to find patterns in rectangles as their length and width increases/decreases. A look ahead... Students will be writing a multiplication test on Monday, December 3rd. This will be more challenging than the last check in but will include the same concepts. They will receive a guide for this early this week to help them prepare. Dear Parents,
The next Healthy Hunger fundraiser is Nov. 28th Subway. The deadline to order is Friday Nov. 23. The new and exciting option is a Nutrition Break snack from Cobs!! The first theme is “Scones”. Go online and select the tasty scone of your choice. Your child will be able to pick up their scone from their homeroom teacher during nutrition break Dec. 12th. We hope you enjoy the new snack option. Stay tuned for other themes from our local Cobs Bakery. Thank you for participating in the F.A.N.S. (Fundraising Association for Nose Creek School) fundraising events! F.A.N.S. |
