A guide to the wonders of grade 5
Please ensure that students have a signed form for the Glenbow field trip on Tuesday of next week. Also, we still have room for 1 volunteer if anyone has any interest!

Humanities
The week that was... We began our character creation Research and Development by identifying things that make us care about a character in the story. Students workshopped their characters in different focus groups and had the opportunity to write a scene that included their character. We also finished our Historic figure of Canada to help us continue to build on our Canadian Identity concept. The look ahead... We will continue to build our narrative writing skills by building our understanding of what makes a good story. We are also looking ahead to our immigration project which will be introduced in 1 week. Science The week that was... We wrapped up our study of electricity and magnetism and moving forward into our study of Chemistry. This week, we learned about different types of mixtures and the 3 phases of matter. The look ahead... We will be doing several experiments through our study of chemistry including a lab experiment with Ms. Ng's grade 9 class. These will look at liquid density, solutions and pH level. Math The week that was... We created geometry dictionaries for 2D and 3D shapes. We have been exploring area, perimeter and shapes through class objects and building shapes out of blocks. The look ahead... We will learn about volume and capacity of a 3D shape. We will also be creating a zoo to explore geometric concepts and terms. This will begin next week.
Students are researching and writing about an historical figure for Canada. This is due Friday, but they are to bring me a draft early next week. The written portion is 3 paragraphs long and I've told them to organize their writing into the 3 categories that are on the graphic organizer. Some students were struggling with the identity portion of the research. We used as an example in class Alexander Mackenzie, who crossed the country twice by canoe to find a route between the St. Lawrence and northern BC for the Sea Otter fur trade. We determined that he was hard-working, resilient, gritty, fearless, fueled by failure, an explorer, a leader and he was not afraid to ask for help. We watched this clip starting at the 33 minute mark: Today in Humanities, we spoke about how we might create a character for a story.
We determined that interesting characters are emotionally complex and can experience many different emotions at a time. We determined that a character's motivations should be clear and based on values. We also determined that a character should be faced with hard choices and experience inner conflict. Tomorrow, students will write 6 sentences describing an interesting character of their creation. The only other criteria is that this character needs to have given something up.
Here are 6 review questions for Monday's test. I have also attached a practice document.
1. Miss Malayko flipped a coin 20 times. She flipped heads 8 times and tails 12 times. Write the fraction to represent each of the experimental probability. 2. There are 6 green balls, 5 red balls and 3 orange balls. Which colour is most likely to be pulled? 3. There are 262 students in grade 5. There will be 6 classes. How many students will be in each class? 4. How possible is it that I will roll an odd number on a 6-sided dice? a. Impossible b. Possible c. Certain 5. If there are 23 cookies shared between 4 people, how many cookies does each person get? 6. List all of the ways you can evenly divide 36 using whole numbers. Students will have a division and probability test on Monday. It will feature 16 questions very similar to the mid-test.
I will post example questions to the blog each day that are very closely related to the ones on the test. Firstly: Estimate 589/3 Secondly: calculate 637/4 |
